Back to Basics Concrete and Clay
Knowing how to lay foundations
We at Kelvin Griffiths and Son are reputable North Wales Builders for over 30 years. We know that foundations are critical to any building work. In the images below we show the typical stages in detail. Most work of this nature is subject to local authority inspection and is undertaken in accordance with approved drawings and we can help with these stages.

Sometimes the work looks messy and you would be surprised what gets dug out of footings. We clear the total area and mark out the channels that will be the load bearing footings for a building or extension. If the channels are sound they act as shuttering otherwise we apply screening, in this clay example the trenches are solid so we can run-in the cement mix.
Once the foundation channel is set we then build our footing retaining walls to the defined ground level height; clear away the rubble that has built up in the foundation process and then back fill with aggregate and sand which is compacted.
A strong water proof membrane is then fitted and under floor insulation is cut and installed, in this case we have channelled through the dense insulation for piped air ways linking existing air blocks to the new air blocks that we will fit, to maintain under floor air flow to the existing building, as shown.
Ready mixed concrete is then brought to the new floor area, spread, tamped and smoothed ready to set and for the new extension build to continue.
